Reasons to Think Big

It’s plastered on motivational memes & inspirational posters. It’s what your parents tell you when they give you that talk about your future and to make sure to…

DREAM BIG!

To dream big most definitely requires you to think big for your future. In theory, dreaming big sounds like great advice and somewhat easy to do. I mean, without big dreams, would people ever achieve their goals and reach their full potential? Of course, we have to think big in order to dream big! Doing so, helps us achieve our goals in life, which makes those dreams become a reality.

But it is important to remember that thinking big requires intentional actions to bring those dreams to fruition. In addition to helping our dreams happen, there are several other reasons why thinking big for the future is so important.

Positive Thoughts Builds Momentum

Let’s take the popular Buddhist philosophy, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” When you think about it, the act of dreaming big activates our brains to start to notice possibilities we might not have seen before. These new opportunities help support the ideas that are our big dreams.

By allowing yourself to imagine the how, the what, the when: you begin actively engaging with positive thoughts and create an open mindset. Expressing this positivity creates more connections and prospects that help turn dreams into reality. Your continued belief in your dreams then creates momentum that builds exponentially over time.

Your Focus Turns to Planning

When you have an open mindset, you are able to focus on the tasks that will lead you to reach your dreams. As you plan, you begin to notice new ways of doing things. When you start to focus on the details, you begin to better understand the steps you need to take to reach your dreams.

Of course, there will always be dreamers who focus their minds on all the things that could go wrong. However, people that do this will eventually get wrapped up in frustration and give up.

Instead, you need to combine that positive mindset, mentioned above, with your newfound focus and use those difficult challenges you experience as learning blocks to help you work towards your dreams.

When you’re positive and start planning with that mindset then what you focus on will grow. By being dedicated to making your dreams a reality, you are better able to focus on the goals and learning experiences in order to keep the ball rolling in the right direction.

Resilience for the Future Happens After Failure

Some failures are inevitable, no matter how much we plan or how hard we try. Obviously, it’s not something we look forward to. However, there is one overwhelmingly good thing that can come from failing and that’s being able to become resilient.

First, you can’t fail if you don’t first think big about your future. When we fail as we’re dreaming big and aiming high… that’s “failing forward” and actually getting us closer to achieving what we set out to do. Through failures, we gain insight into what works and what doesn’t. This allows us to reevaluate and adjust our planning to produce a better outcome next time.

By learning from your failures and moving forward you become more resilient in your resolve to make your dreams happen. But sometimes we get stuck and have trouble completing big projects. So try some of these suggestions for helping you get motivated.

While I know that failing is never fun, I promise that a bruised ego never hurts anyone. Instead, you’ll get back up feeling stronger, more resilient, and with more knowledge than you had before. Soon you’ll begin to realize that the only real failure is in not trying at all.

Goals Teach the Importance of Time Management

When you think of someone who is a “big dreamer” having superior time management skills is probably not something that comes to mind. But those people who are serious about making their dreams become reality eventually learn to use their time wisely.

They understand that the only way to reaching their dreams is to plan ahead and create goals. Obviously, all your goals can’t be achieved in one day. Planning and carrying out the tasks to achieve your goals takes time. By focusing on reaching your goals, you ultimately learn that time is your biggest asset and you need to make use of it if you want to make things happen.

Thinking BIG Increases Your Confidence

Before you embark on this journey, thoughts such as “there’s no way I can do this” may have crossed your mind. Words like “can’t” and “impossible” may have been on replay in your mind.

Soon you will realize that when you start dreaming big for your future and shooting for the stars that seeing even small results will improve your confidence greatly. Not just with regards to reaching your dreams, but in all areas of your life!

What Steps Should You Take For Creating Your Goals

  • Create a vision board
  • Do your research and make a plan
  • Write down your goals
  • Share your goals with family & friends
  • Evaluate and measure your progress

Start With Believing In Yourself

Changing your mentality to ‘thinking big’ does not happen overnight. Change takes time. Treat a change of mindset like a diet change. Make gradual changes and celebrate successes and you will be on track to turn these changes into habits.

Don’t wait until life is perfect. You can visualize, and create the life that you want, and the mindset needed to realize your dreams and goals. Just take the first step and start. Manifestation style thinking, hard work, and a strong focus can make miracles happen.

Discover Your Dreams Through Research

In order to think big, it helps to understand the possibilities. The best way to learn just how big your dreams can be and what you would need to achieve them is to intentionally do research.

Some questions that could help you plan for your dreams might be:

  • What are the necessary skills you need to acquire?
  • What experts or professional organizations can help you?
  • Are there places or events you should visit to gain understanding?
  • Is there a timeline that needs to be fulfilled?

Let’s say you have always dreamed of starting an apparel company. If you want to create your own designs you would want to make sure you know what software is best and learn how to use it. You will want to find out how to protect your brand rights for which the legal process can take some time. Attending an apparel industry conference can assist in finding distributors to order materials from and discovering technologies that you can use in your business.

Create The Goals You Need to Accomplish

Once you have more information and details, it’s time to make a list of things you need to do in the form of goals. In doing this, you are able to place your ambitions in the forefront of your mind and make them a priority in your life.

Start by thinking big about the goals you will need to reach in order to make your dreams happen. Begin by making a list of some of the goals that you will need to accomplish. Next, think about what order would be most appropriate so you can prioritize your list. Then before choosing one to work toward, dive a little deeper into the details and make sure each goal meets these criteria:

Making SMART Goals for the Future

When creating an action plan for your goals there are specific steps that can better help you be successful in reaching them. Following the concepts behind this SMART acronym can help you devise goals that are easy to understand and achieve.

Specifically, SMART goals need to be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Time sensitive

Making a goal something within reach — not just saying “I want to make a million dollars” — can actually help increase your odds of success. It’s also important to add a measurable component so that you can objectively determine if you met your goal (ie “sign 4 contracts” vs bring in lots of customers”).

In addition, making your goals specific and time-sensitive helps you focus on what you really need to do in the form of small actionable steps that will assist you in attaining the big ones. This will help keep you on track with dates & deadlines you need to reach. If you focus on each of these points when you are thinking big about your goals, you are sure to create a realistic plan for success.

Find A Support System for Reaching Your Goals

Having a supportive group around you makes keeping a positive proactive mindset easy, even on days when your resolve is weak. A positive environment strengthens you on the journey to reach your goals and change your mindset.

So don’t be afraid to share your dreams with your family and friends.

Evaluate Your Goal Progress & Adjust Your Planning for the Future

As great as it is to check off your goals, it’s important to note that sometimes you may realize that a goal needs to be changed before it can be met. In order to think big for the future, you have to be intentional about assessing your progress.

So come up with a designated time, like monthly or quarterly, to re-evaluate the progress you are making. Do you need to change what you are measuring or maybe add a step that will better help you reach that goal? Maybe you realize you need to reprioritize your goals.

Make sure to notice that the point of evaluating is to adjust small aspects of your planning. You definitely should not be changing your end goals in a way that keeps pushing them further out and harder to reach.
